MINI LESSON

CUSTOM QUESTION FEEDBACK

You may want to provide a user with Immediate Feedback when they respond to a question in a ToolBook course. ToolBook provides multiple ways to display question feedback to the user.

One available option uses a popup to display the Immediate Feedback. Unfortunately, you cannot control the appearance or location of this popup. This Mini Lesson will demonstrate how to create your own custom feedback, so that you can control the appearance and location of your own popup.

OVERVIEW

In this demonstration the behavior will be as follows:

  1. When the user responds to the question a Text Pane will appear with feedback regarding their response.
  2. Actions Editor logic will be used to control the text in the Text Pane. Also to hide and show the Text Pane.
  3. A graphic will be used to display a red "x" in the corner of the Text Pane. This way the user can click the graphic to close the Text Pane after they have read the feedback.

STEP 1 - ADDING A TEXT PANE TO YOUR PAGE

On each question page, a Text Pane will be needed to display the feedback. ToolBook provides a wide variety of pre-built Text Panes.

Rename the Text Pane "Feedback" or something that will designate that it will be used for question feedback.

Text panes are not auto-sizing, so you will need to size your text pane to fit the longest feedback text.

STEP 2 - CREATING THE "X" BUTTON

An "X" button, or close button, can be created and added to the text pane. When this "X" button is clicked, the text pane will close.

This step will briefly describe a way to create the "X" button:

USING AN IMAGE

  1. Use a graphics program, such as Photoshop to create the image of the button
  2. Add this image to a Button object or to an Image object and position it appropriately
  3. This image can be used multiple times for all the feedback text panes in your book

STEP 3 - ADDING THE ACTIONS EDITOR LOGIC

The logic to set the text of the text pane to the question feedback text and to make the text pane visible will be added to the question object.

Below is an outline of the general steps necessary to have the text pane appear, with the appropriate text, when the question is answered.

  1. Open the Actions Editor for the question object
  2. Choose the On question answered event
  3. Set up conditional statements for each answer. The user's response is stored in the Answer parameter.
  4. Under each conditional statement
  1. Below is a screen shot of the Actions Editor logic:

STEP 4 - "X" BUTTON LOGIC

The logic to close the text pane when the "X" button is clicked will be added to the "X" button.  When the button is clicked you will need to set the visible property of the button and the text pane to false.

See the example logic below:
