Windows Media Player plugin not working in Chrome and Firefox

Web Browser ›› Error Messages and Warnings ››

QUESTION

I'm using a Universal Media Player (configured as a Windows Media Player on the Advanced tab of the editor) to play a media file. It plays fine in Internet Explorer but not Firefox or Chrome.

DETAILS

In order for the Universal Media Player to successfully play your media file utilizing Windows Media Player technology within a Web Browser, the Windows Media Player must first be installed (as a plugin) for your browsers.

The Windows Media Player plugin is available in the form of different installers for different Web Browsers.

Internet Explorer

There is no need to install anything extra, because the needed plugin is already installed with every installation of Windows.

Chrome

With the release of version 42 of Chrome in early 2015, Google has decided that their Chrome web browser will no longer support plugins created using the NPAPI plugin technology. This means QuickTime, Windows Media Player, and Real Media Player will no longer work in Chrome.

Please note that Flash is still supported. View more information about using Chrome with ToolBook content:

Firefox

With the release of version 52 of Firefox in late 2016, Firefox has decided that their Firefox web browser will no longer support plugins created using the NPAPI plugin technology. This means QuickTime, Windows Media Player, and Real Media Player will no longer work in Firefox.

Please note that Flash is still supported.

If you are using a version of Firefox older than version 52, instructions on the Firefox web site should help you get the Windows Media Player plugin installed and functioning properly.
